I was eating at the Olive Garden the other day and had a phenomenal server. You know what I’m talking about. Don’t you love it when someone goes above your expectations in service? Most of us really enjoy being served well. Of course, the opposite is true regarding being served poorly! We have all had the experience of being in a restaurant and the service was less than acceptable. How did you feel when the server just seemed to be doing a “job” and not really interested in serving you? Well, service is a pretty big deal for our Lord. In fact he places so much emphasis on it that He said that if any of His followers wished to be first in the kingdom they would necessarily be the SERVANT of all. Wow! I’ve got to admit that while I love being served, I don’t always get excited about serving. Now, let me explain that before you are ready to cut me off at the knees.  I don’t have trouble serving those that I love. In fact, I actually enjoy serving the people that I love. Don’t you enjoy serving the people that you really love and care about? I’m sure you do.  We get to work on being first in the kingdom by serving and the service is something we enjoy because we love the people we serve!! Unfortunately, it seems that the church is dangerously close to adopting an "It's all about me" kind of attitude. Clearly, such an attitude is foreign to the teachings of Jesus. Actually, Jesus taught that believers are to love all people. So, really, serving others should always be a matter of love for the other person. Wait! There's more! Jesus also said that when we serve others, our service is really being rendered to Him. Okay, here's the deal. If we love Jesus we will love others and if we love others we will serve them and if we serve others out of love for them and Christ, we are actually demonstrating our love for Jesus. What a concept! How would such an attitude of love and service impact your home life? What about your work life? What about all of our relationships? I think it would dramatically impact not only our fellowship with Christ but also our fellow human beings. Anyway, just my thoughts.
